Small Steps, Big Changes - Extended Reading

Unit 05: Move More, Live Better

Reading Passage 1 – Extended Reading

Small Steps, Big Changes

Big Question

How can being active make our lives better?

Genre: Informational Text

Text Structure: Reasons and Examples

Main Reading Skill: Identify Reasons and Supporting Examples

Many adults want to be more active, but busy lives can make this difficult. They may sit for many hours at work, while traveling, or at home. However, small changes can add more movement to everyday life. These changes are useful for several reasons.

First, small activities are easy to add to a busy day. People can take the stairs instead of the elevator or walk to a nearby shop. At work, they can stretch during a short break. These activities do not need much time.

Second, small changes can help people build a healthy routine. For example, people can stand up every hour to reduce the time they spend sitting. They can also choose a regular time for a short walk. When people repeat an activity each day, it can become a healthy habit.

Finally, being active can help people feel better. A short walk after work can help a person relax. Regular activity can also give people more energy for work and daily tasks.

People do not need to change everything at once. They can gradually increase their activity as it becomes easier. Small changes are simple to start, easier to continue, and can become part of a healthier life.
