Reading Passage 1 – Extended Reading

A New Beginning

Big Question

What makes some moments important in our lives?

Genre: Personal Narrative

Text Structure: Chronological Order

Main Reading Skill: Identify Sequence of Events

Last year, Daniel moved from Britain to Riyadh with his family for a new job. He was excited about his new life, but he faced some challenges.

First, Daniel looked for an apartment near his work. Many apartments were expensive, so he searched for several days. Finally, he found a good apartment in a compound. He also found a school for his children near their new home.

Traffic was another challenge. The roads were often busy, and the metro was sometimes crowded. At first, Daniel used the metro. Then, he rented a car. Later, he bought a new car.

Daniel could not speak Arabic when he arrived. However, many people he met spoke English, so he could communicate easily at work and in shops.

The family also had to adjust to the hot weather. They stayed inside during the hot afternoon and went out more in the evening. There were many shops and restaurants nearby, and it was easy to find what they needed.

After a few months, Daniel met new people, his children made friends, and the family felt comfortable in Riyadh.
