Part 1 – Reading Comprehension (20 Marks – 1 Mark for Each)

Section 1 – Read the following text then answer the questions below.

John and his family went to the zoo last holiday. John was very happy because he liked discovering animals and had some pets, such as a rabbit, a turtle, and a hamster. The family went early in the morning to avoid the heavy crowds.
As they entered the gate, there was a pond with swans swimming. They were so gentle and peaceful. John read the fact file and learned that swans live in temperate climates. He liked the swan's white color. Then John saw the lions. He took some pictures while the lions slept under a tree. John read some useful information about the lions' original habitat. He was a bit scared of them, especially when they roared. Next, they visited the elephants. They were huge but kind. It made John giggle that a baby elephant was playing with a ball. However, he felt sad that these gentle creatures are endangered because of overhunting. Selfish hunters killed large numbers of them to sell their ivory. After spending some time observing the elephants, they visited the monkeys. The monkeys were a bit noisy and playful. Lastly, they visited the pandas, John’s favorite animals. Pandas were very quiet, cute, and fluffy. John knew a lot about them because he used to read about pandas.
Before going back home, John and his family bought some souvenirs. John took some pictures of sea animals. Unfortunately, John did not have the chance to learn more about them as the aquarium was closed for repairs.
